Company Freak is a feeling. It's a recombinant, shifting enterprise: a revolving cast of legendary vocalists and session players from classic disco and funk bands of the 1970s meets a handpicked and curated assortment of some of the most astonishing singers and musicians currently lighting up the global dance music scenes. The mastermind of fashion-forward musician-DJ-songwriter-record producer Jason King, Company Freak’s fabulousness is a deliberate throwback to orchestral disco, funk, soul and house— that moment when nightclubs like the Paradise Garage and Studio 54 ruled the New York nightlife and bands like Change, Shalamar, Boney M, Midnight Star, Kid Creole and the Coconuts made waves on the charts. Writing and producing original tunes with a flair for the cosmopolitan sophistication of classic-era disco and funk, King recruited talents like Norma Jean Wright and Alfa Anderson, two of the original lead chanteuses from legendary disco group Chic, and Hubert Eaves, a founding keyboardist-producer behind 80s dance music favorite D-Train. The membership of Company Freak is a collective that is ever growing, changing, becoming something new and unseen.
Company Freak’s opulent dancefloor sound is unquestionably retro and groovy, but it’s state-of-the-art and techno-sleek, too. Mixed by DFA Records legend Eric Broucek (Hercules and Love Affair, LCD Soundsystem, Holy Ghost), Company Freak’s songs arrive in a contemporary electronic setting that shares the same modern alternative dance pop universe as acts like Daft Punk, Duke Dumont, Gorgon City, Clean Bandit, Scissor Sisters, and Hot Chip.
Company Freak released their debut EP, Le Disco Social, in March 2014 on Los Angeles’ based Opus Label (famous for their compilations with Perez Hilton): the critically acclaimed record, recorded with top musicians the US and the Middle East, was called “the most intelligent disco album ever made” by journalist Robert Christgau and was included on Rhapsody Music’s Top 25 pop albums of the year.
Company Freak’s exuberant new EP, Lux Life, finds the band delving even deeper into an eclectic mix of planetary dancefloor sounds. Company Freak has played a host of memorable international shows, including headlining Central Park Summerstage in 2014 alongside special guests Sam Sparro, Ultra Naté and Kevin Aviance, and the band recently opened the season at New York’s esteemed Harlem Stage complex. Their songs have been remixed by award-winning international DJs like Opolopo, Justin Faust, Midnight Magic, DJ Spen, Eric Kupper, Jodie Harsh, Go Go Bizkitt! And many others.
