Barbez w/ opener Larry Rooster featuring Rebecca Moore

Joe's Pub

July 8

Doors at 9:00PM
Show at 9:30PM

Gorgeous old-world cabaret collides with modernity in this sui generis band. Wringing elements of European folksong, post-war classical, and experimental rock into an otherworldly soundscape Barbez moves effortlessly between haunting meditations and explosive frenzy. With: Dan Kaufman (guitar), Danny Tunick (marimba, vibraphone), Peter Hess (clarinet, bass clarinet), Catherine McCrae (violin), Peter Lettre (bass), and John Bollinger (drums).

"The music of Barbez conjures an imaginary place full of narrow, crooked streets that are paved with ancient, damp cobblestones. The Brooklyn-based ensemble looks to Eastern Europe for inspiration and its expansive rock draws on such composers as Brecht, Schnittke, and Satie. But Barbez is firmly lodged in the present. Its original compositions, written mostly by the guitarist and band leader Dan Kaufman, capture the angst, joy, and strangeness of life in the twenty-first century.” The New Yorker

Larry Rooster is the new name for the group led by singer, violinist, and songwriter Rebecca Moore which also includes Dan Kaufman (guitar), Danny Tunick (bass), Christy Davis (drums), Pinky Weitzman (viola) and John Frazier (guitar). The band imbues Moore’s unique, avant-pop songs with razor-edged guitars and a haunting fog of violin and viola.
