David Nagler & Friends: Carl Sandburg's Chicago Poems Record Release Show

Joe's Pub

October 16

Doors at 6PM
Show at 7PM

Following a two-night live debut in January, David Nagler returns to Joe’s Pub with a ten-person ensemble to perform Carl Sandburg’s Chicago Poems. The concert will celebrate the release of the studio recording, which features guests hailing from or associated with Chicago, including Jeff Tweedy, Robbie Fulks, Jon Langford, Sally Timms, Kelly Hogan, Daniel Knox, and more.

Recorded in 2015 at a number of studios including The Magic Shop in NYC and the Wilco Loft in Chicago, Carl Sandburg’s Chicago Poems features sixteen of Sandburg’s poems re-imagined as a song cycle. The compositions draw on a wide variety of American music: folk, jazz, rock, classical, and musical theater. Carl Sandburg’s Chicago Poems was co-produced by film composer Max Avery Lichtenstein (Tarnation, Jesus’ Son) and co-arranged by Jon Natchez (The War on Drugs, Beirut).

The Chicago Poems collection was published 100 years ago in 1916. Including well-known poems like “Chicago” (“Hog Butcher for the World / Tool Maker / Stacker of Wheat”) and “Fog” (“The fog comes / on little cat feet”), the collection was highly-regarded for its style, topicality, and immediacy, and helped establish Carl Sandburg as the “people’s poet.” Sandburg would go on to be known as the definitive Renaissance Man: poet, journalist, biographer, musician, and orator.

The band includes:
Jean Cook (violin), Therese Cox (accordion), Jeanann Dara (viola), Adam Gold (drums & percussion), Andrew Hall (double bass), Clara Kennedy (cello), Daniel Lipsitz (clarinets, saxophone, flute), Dan Lipton (piano), Dana Lyn (violin), and Justin Mullens (trumpet, French horn)
