Once again Joe's Pub hosts Addie Brownlee and her beloved tribute to Dolly Parton, I Beg Your Parton?! Addie Sings Dolly, on Friday, January 13, 2016. Coming a few days prior to Parton's 71st birthday, the show focuses on the great songs that Parton has performed throughout her career - getting to the heart of what has made Parton such an icon.
"I've sung these songs all my life but now when I sit with them I'm so moved by who Dolly Parton really is," says Brownlee. "The wigs and plastic surgery and 'it takes a lot of money to look this cheap' persona is no doubt a part of her, but I wanted to make her writing and musical judgment (including knowing when to sing a great song that's not her own) the focus."
Addie Brownlee's voice has been compared to singers like Dusty Springfield. "Even Dusty Springfield's name evoked the sound of her voice. I love the comparison." If Brownlee's voice is of the dust, the earth, then her lyrics are a hard rain. Eroding the surface, exposing feelings not easily expressed or classified, but so familiar you'll wonder why these songs haven't been written before.
