From the ashes of Los Angeles’ 1992 rebellion/riots arose a collective of East Side musicians committed to respectfully continuing the legacy of over 70 years of Chicano Rock, standing on the shoulders of giants like Ritchie Valens, Cannibal and The Headhunters, Los Lobos, and many others. Named “one of Los Angeles’ most important bands” by the LA Times and winners of a Grammy award in 2013, Quetzal forges a sound that will simultaneously make you dance and contemplate change, a sound as rich and complex as their pluri-ethnic barrio experience.
She needs no introduction, but here is her story. Betty Bonifassi became known with The Triplets of Belleville, her collaboration with DJ Champion, and the duo Beast. She is undoubtedly one of Canada’s great voices and exudes a magnetism that is unreal!
She released her debut album on September 23, 2014 with the Montreal-based L-A be label. In collaboration with Jean François Lemieux (production and bass), Benjamin Vigneault (drums) and Alex Mac Mahon (production and keyboards), Betty’s ambitious album (which began as music research for Steinbeck’s play Of Mice and Men) pays tribute to African-American prisoners’ songs from the 1920s collected by ethno-musicologist Alan Lomax in the Southern US states. These chants helped to maintain the pace of the unbearable and inhuman work.
Maarja Nuut ft. Hendrik Kaljujärv
Maarja Nuut is a fiddler and singer from Estonia. Her music combines traditional dance tunes, songs, and stories with live electronics to create an intricate layered soundscape in a space where minimalism and experimental music meet the village musical traditions of pre-war Europe.
In her performance, Maarja searches for a lively and relaxed state like a cat poised to leap. She says this state "gives rise to music and makes me want to prolong being in the moment while altering ways of seeing, hearing and perceiving. It is always “now” and old tunes are as fresh as improvisations which were born a second ago”.
A special collaboration with Estonian electronic music composer Hendrik Kaljujärv will see Maarja’s hypnotic acoustic loops met with more edgy electronic sounds. Hendrik Kaljujärv has been actively present in different art forms, creating sound and music for drama and installations. Together they push boundaries and expand soundscapes of Maarja's latest album "Une meeles" that was released internationally spring 2016 and has reached great attention and appraise around the globe.
