Penny Arcade, Joey Arias, Stew and Heidi Rodewald, Barb Jungr and Carol Lipnik... Punk Kabarett International assembles an eclectic roster of performers whose artistic prowess may seem at odds with the DIY caterwaul of punk. However, punk is more than mohawks and nose rings, more than an aesthetic; it is a shared history and approach, an ethos. In a world where everything is increasingly commodified and homogenized, punk is a resolute commitment to individual freedom and solidarity with the grifters, bohemians and outsiders whose position often grants them a critical perspective on the mainstream.

No one articulates this perspective with more clarity, humor and incisiveness than Penny Arcade, a pioneering performance artist who came of age in the back room of Max's Kansas City and began performing as a teenage in John Vacarro's Theater of the Ridiculous. Now an acclaimed Britsh cabaret star, Barb Jungr was part of London's punk scene in 1980's and carries that blistering edge into her revelatory interpretations of the work of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen (among others). Around the same time Joey Arias was a fixture at seminal NYC hotspots like Club 57, Mudd Club and famously backed up David Bowie on Saturday Night Live. An acclaimed Broadway run of their "Passing Strange," was an unexpected turn for avowed avowed rock and rollers, Stew and Heidi Rodewald, who cut their teeth in the rock clubs of Southern California and display a punk-like penchant for confrontation with their provocatively named band, "Stew and the Negro Problem."  Coney Island native Carol Lipnik grew up amidst the sideshows and amusements of a gritty carnival landscape which informed her early work as "The Siren of Coney Island." Lipnik's most recent album, "Almost Back to Normal," sees her take a step back from the freak show, but her poetic gaze is still fixed on the outsider and the underdog.

Presented by Earl Dax ("Weimar New York"), Punk Kabarett International is a showcase event for artists represented by DAX MGMT. More information at www.daxmgmt.com.
