FIELD OF MARS
Presented by New York City Players
Written and directed by Richard Maxwell
Presented in association with NYU Skirball

In 2019, NYU Skirball commissioned a new work by award-winning playwright/director Richard Maxwell and his celebrated New York City Players.

After a long Covid-related delay, Skirball presents the international premiere of Maxwell’s FIELD OF MARS, a two-act play produced in association with the Under The Radar Festival and co-commissioned by The Walker Art Center with support provided by the National Endowment for the Arts .

Act I happens in three parts: Creation, a chain restaurant in North Carolina, Outdoors. During Creation, Adam and Eve are introduced after a brief exploration into color and light. At a restaurant in Chapel Hill, two songwriters enter in order to sell a song to two younger musicians. The songwriter talks to the bartender, who plays in a cover band. As workers and customers interact to make a fast-casual dining experience, the songwriter and bartender step outside.

Act II ranges wider, moving between past, present and future: Two women take a hike in the desert, Early Man figures try to describe a landscape, Satan refuses to kneel before Lord, and the animal instincts of coupling and destruction move through generations. Meanwhile, back in Chapel Hill, the staff continue their work.
