WE ARE THE PUBLIC THEATER

WE ARE THE PUBLIC THEATER.

The Covid-19 pandemic continues to reshape our daily lives, but some things remain constant and burn brighter than ever. And that is our strive to create art in this moment, to continue to drive our mission forward, to support our artists, and stay connected and engaged to our audiences and communities.

Each day we are redefining what it means to make theater in this moment and to share great art and stories with the widest possible audience. Proudly, we are doing just that. Over the past several months, through the generous support of our donor community, we've been able to create and share a variety of free digital expressions with over 500,000 people across every state in the nation and over 40 counties and it continues to grow.

Together is how The Public has always moved forward and together we'll get through this moment and thrive.

Conceived over 60 years ago as one of the nation's first nonprofit theaters, The Public has long operated on the principles that theater is an essential cultural force and that art and culture belong to everyone. Under the leadership of Artistic Director, Oskar Eustis and Executive Director Patrick Willingham, our wide breadth of programming, when not facing a continued health pandemic, includes:

An Annual Season of New Work, at our five-stage landmark home at Astor Place

Free Shakespeare in the Park, at The Delacorte Theater in Central Park

Joe's Pub, presenting the best in live music and performance

Mobile Unit, touring free theater throughout NYC's five boroughs

Public Works, deeply engaged in our communities across the five boroughs with partner organizations

Public Forum, a space where art, ideas, and action collide

Under the Radar, an annual international festival redefining the art of making theater

Public Shakespeare Initiative, engaging our audiences, developing artists, educating our young people and their teaches through the breadth of humanity that Shakespeare's work captures.

Since premiering HAIR in 1967, The Public continues to create the canon of American Theater and, though paused now, is currently represented on Broadway by the Tony Award-winning musical Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Girl From the North Country. Our programs and productions can also be seen regionally across the country and around the world. The Public has received 59 Tony Awards, 184 Obie Awards, 55 Drama Desk Awards, 58 Lortel Awards, 34 Outer Critic Circle Awards, 13 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards, 53 AUDELCO Awards, 6 Antonyo Awards, and 6 Pulitzer Prizes.
