ONE SINGULAR SENSATION: Celebrating A CHORUS LINE’s 50th Anniversary

The iconic musical A CHORUS LINE celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025! The groundbreaking musical—conceived and directed by Michael Bennett, with a book by Nicholas Dante and James Kirkwood, music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban, and choreography by Bob Avian and Michael Bennett—had its world premiere in The Public’s Newman Theater, where it began performances 50 years ago on April 15, 1975.

Following dancers auditioning for the ensemble of an upcoming musical, A CHORUS LINE explores the ambitions and experiences of the dancers through the now-classic songs “I Hope I Get It,” “What I Did for Love,” “At the Ballet,” “The Music and the Mirror,” and more.

A CHORUS LINE went on to a record-breaking run on Broadway, where it ran at the Shubert Theatre for 6,137 performances, holding the title of longest-running production in Broadway history for nearly 14 years. The musical won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and has been produced around the world.

Six costumes, designed by Theoni V. Aldredge, and memorabilia from A CHORUS LINE are now on display in The Public Theater's lobby, outside the Newman Theater, through April 28.

Curated by The Public's Costume Department and Public Theater History subcommittee.
