Emilio Solla + Antonio Lizana Quartet

Latin GRAMMY winner and 6x GRAMMY nominee, Argentina-born and New York-based pianist, composer, and arranger Emilio Solla teams up for his 15th album with rising star Spanish flamenco-jazz vocalist and saxophonist Antonio Lizana. Together they have created a highly original album, El Siempre Mar, where old Argentine folk songs by foundational composers such as Atahualpa Yupanqui and Astor Piazzolla live together with original compositions from both artists. In this new take on the “cantes de ida y vuelta” (roundtrip songs), these two artists have managed to find a unique and contemporary meeting point between the music of Argentina, the south of Spain, and jazz.

Emilio Solla has been lauded for his artistry in summoning global styles and rhythms. His aesthetic eloquence can be experienced in his Latin GRAMMY-winning album, Puertos: Music from International Waters. The master composer-arranger has also earned six GRAMMY nominations. Solla has performed at some of the most iconic venues in Europe, Latin America, and the United States alongside Jazz and Latin legends such as Paquito D'Rivera, Billy Hart, Arturo O'Farrill, Edmar Castañeda, Silk Road Ensemble member Cristina Pato, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the WDR Big Band. Of his piano performances, The New York Times has said, “The virile throb of Astor Piazzolla's nuevo tango is omnipresent in the pianist Emilio Solla's stately pulse.”

Antonio Lizana is considered both by audiences and critics worldwide as a distinctive figure in the contemporary flamenco-jazz field. In addition to his extraordinary skills as a composer, lyricist, and singer, Lizana is a world-class jazz saxophonist. The uniqueness of his style has brought him international recognition. He has performed with his quintet in venues and festivals all around the globe, including Womex; Etnosur; SXSW; Flamenco festivals in London, New York, and San Francisco; Flamenco Biennale (Holland); Barcelona Jazz Festival; Shanghai Jazz Fest; and more.

“…it is truly an international affair, merging North American jazz with Argentine tango and Spanish flamenco in breathtaking fashion.”

— The New York City Jazz Record

“Combining Solla’s jazz-tango and folkloric influences with Lizana's flamenco roots, El Siempre Mar features the rhythmic vernacular of cantes de ida y vuelta (known as ‘road trip songs’), and the pair’s masterful interpretation.”
