Blue Ink: A Night with Jillian Walker, presented in association with MTF

November 4, 2019

It’s sacred space. It’s an elegant lecture and calling down. It’s a performance of invitation, declaration, reclamation. It’s dramaturgy of the spirit. Join Jillian for a night of soul-singing that samples from an array of her original works; including selections from her ancestor-revering epic, SKiNFoLK: An American Show, which will have its world premiere at The Bushwick Starr in February 2020.

Jillian Walker is a multi-faceted theater artist: a composer and performer of visual and sonic scores-as-plays that shape and interrogate culture through their use of time, ritual, identity, structure and ancestral remembrance. Always interested in healing and liberation, her genre-pushing work, SKiNFoLK: An American Show will have its world premiere at The Bushwick Starr in 2020. Her play Sarah’s Salt. has been developed at Roundabout Theater Company and MCC Theater, received an Honorable Mention for the 2017 Relentless Award (American Playwriting Foundation) and was a finalist for the 2019 Bay Area Playwrights Festival. Jillian holds dramaturgy as the core of her artistic practice and has deepened her dramaturgical ideas in residencies with University Musical Society (University of Michigan), The School of Making and Thinking, and Catwalk Institute. Sometimes, her dramaturgy becomes a performance in itself; as with her lecture/ritual-performance work, Songs of Speculation, which premiered at JACK in 2018. Jillian is a member of the groundbreaking cohort of MTF Makers at Musical Theater Factory, the genre-defying artists in Makers Lab at Ars Nova, and is currently under commission with Soho Rep. She holds an MFA in Dramaturgy from Columbia University and occasionally freelances as a capital “D” Dramaturg, curator and teacher when the spirit moves.

Musical Theatre Factory is a 501(c)3 non-profit artist service organization dedicated to developing new work in a collaborative atmosphere free from the pressures of critical or financial success that dismantles oppressive ideologies towards collective liberation through powerful and joyful story and song.
