November 1, 2019

Sophie B. Hawkins is a Grammy nominated, American singer-songwriter, and accomplished musician with nine albums and more than thirty years in the music industry. Hawkins's debut album, Tongues and Tails, achieved both worldwide commercial success (certified Gold) and critical acclaim, earning her a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist and six New York Music Awards in 1993. Hawkins second album, Whaler, was also certified gold and included the US Top 10 hit and ASCAP award winning song “As I Lay Me Down” and as well as the hit “Right Beside You.” “As I Lay Me Down” and “Lose Your Way” from Hawkins third album, Timbre, were famously featured on the TV show “Dawson’s Creek.” On her 2004 album Wilderness, Hawkins demonstrated her extraordinary talents as a musician as well as singer and songwriter playing guitar, cello, keyboard, drums, and a variety of percussion instruments - a recording that Rolling Stone singled out for its “dreamy charm.” Throughout her career, Hawkins has performed live with Chris Isaak, Kristen Chenoweth, Melissa Etheridge, and Sting. Her music has been featured in classic films such as 40 Days and 40 NightsBounceNew Year’s EveMrs. WinterbourneNow and Then, and The Associate and major television shows such as “The Blacklist,” “Dawson’s Creek,” “Party of Five,” and “Northern Lights.” A reimagined version of “As I Lay Me Down” is currently being released in the independent film What Break the Ice.

Hawkins starred as Janis Joplin in the play Room 105. Critics praised her performance and wrote “it was a part she was born to play.” She has also authored her own play with songs that she terms a playsical. She recently returned from recording sessions and promotional events in Germany including filming the syndicated music and talk show “Night Grooves” at the historic Schminke House in Löbau. Hawkins is celebrated on the New York club scene as her recent guest appearance with Jesse’s Girl at Le Poisson Rouge proved and she is working to meet the demand for live performances that reach her established fans and her younger audience. In a recent "Breaking it Down" interview Frank MacKay said, " Sophie has the same enthusiasm, the same spark that she had in the 90's."

Hawkins is celebrating the release of a brand new album called The Woman With a the Sea Dog on November 1 at Joe’s Pub. Hawkins is an accomplished painter and her paintings will be on view as well.
