treya lam: otherland – a seedling / SaaWee x Nikolai Chapochnikov: Multi-dimensionally Human
treya lam is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and composer whose joyously complex identity informs but does not define their work, whether solo or when collaborating with a variety of ensembles. As a 2019 Joe’s Pub Working Group artist and 2022-23 New York Voices commissions recipient, lam continues to develop the world of “otherland” - a ritual created to process and heal through grief and loss. This project utilizes a chamber-folk song cycle, spoken word, movement and film to: process the loss of a parent or loved one; explore radical self-acceptance; explore the relationship between adoptees, diaspora and ancestry; and ultimately find collective healing.
otherland was commissioned by Joe's Pub as part of our New York Voices program. New York Voices is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Multi-dimensionally Human - a ritualistic exploration of IFS
This project is a collaboration between SaaWee, a contemporary ritualistic music group, and Dr. Nikolai Chapochnikov, neuroscientist, meditation teacher, and workshop facilitator. We believe that love pervades all human hearts and that when parts of us are rejected they can express themselves in hurtful way to others. Through music, ritual, movement, and conscious exploration, we create a loving and accepting space to invite healing and acceptance of all our inner exiled parts.
