GMHC’s Cabaret & Howard Ashman Award is an annual star-studded event featuring Broadway actors and celebrities performing beloved Broadway classics and the latest hits.
GMHC is proud to honor Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award-winning composer Alan Menken with the 2024 Howard Ashman Award. Menken was Ashman’s musical collaborator and crafted the music for Ashman’s iconic lyrics in Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, and the Little Shop of Horrors. With 59 awards to his name, in 2020 Menken became the 16th person in history to score EGOT status. Stay tuned for more updates on performers and special guests!
The Howard Ashman Award is named for the Oscar, Golden Globe, and Grammy Award-winning lyricist of Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Little Shop of Horrors who died of AIDS-related complications in 1991. Proceeds from the cabaret will directly support GMHC's lifesaving programs for thousands of people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS. GMHC’s comprehensive psychosocial services include HIV/STI testing, prevention, mental health and substance use treatment, legal and immigration support, housing, workforce development, policy advocacy, and meals and nutrition.
