Ring of Keys, the artist service nonprofit for queer women, trans, and nonbinary musical theatre artists, celebrates its seventh year with its annual benefit. Central to this celebration will be "Queering the Canon: A Retrospective," the latest installment of its signature concert series.
Hosted by Miss Peppermint, the Series reimagines beloved canonical songs as more expansive and inclusive through casting and performance. Audiences will experience these songs queered alongside a new canon of works written in response to the originals. "Queering the Canon: A Retrospective" is a roundup of song pairings from past "Queering the Canon" concerts, featuring songs by Ring of Keys songwriters Joanna Burns, Andi Lee Carter, Anessa Marie Scolpini, Lindsey Augusta Mercer, Zeniba Now & Rodney Bush, Lucier&Rose, and Pearl Rhein.
Performers include Klea Blackhurst, Grant Evan, Esther Fallick, Samy Figaredo, Jack Haven, Natalie Joy Johnson, Jade Jones, Jari Billie Sadé Jones, Petralina Lambert, Tomás Matos, Madison McBride, Jade McLeod, Rivkah Reyes, Sushma Saha, and Murphy Taylor Smith.
The band includes Dionne McClain-Freeney on keys, Magda Kress on bass, Will Shishmanian on guitar, and Kendall Perry on drums.
In addition to the concert, the evening will include a silent auction featuring exclusive items, customized experiences, and food and travel packages. Audiences will also hear from Keys and other artists who have been positively impacted by Ring of Keys’ work.
The event will be directed by S.C. Lucier, with music direction by Dionne McClain-Freeney, stage management by Taylor Poer and casting by Charlie Hano. Queering the Canon: A Retrospective is produced by Ring of Keys Co-Founder Andrea Prestinario.
