What's On
Following sold-out shows and multiple rave reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe and London's Soho Theatre, "Coming Out to Dead People" is making its Joe's Pub debut. This comedy solo show is based on the time when comedian Ricky Sim was grappling with the decision to come out to his Chinese-Malaysian immigrant mother, just as she was diagnosed with terminal cancer – talk about good timing. Combining stand-up and storytelling, the show explores growing up as a gaysian in the noughties in NY, learning how to keep his first boyfriend with the help of the rapper Sean Paul, while navigating the complexity of coming out, alongside the intersection of racial and cultural identity. Ricky Sim is a lawyer-turned-comedian originally from Malaysia. As a standup, he has opened for Julia Scotti (America’s Got Talent) and Marcia Belsky (Comedy Central) and was featured in the New York Comedy Festival, and Asian Comedy Festival. “Coming Out to Dead People” was selected as one of the Offest finalists of the 2024 Off-West End Awards (OFFIES).
