Public Works' Let's Hear it for New York!
An Unforgettable Dance Experience
As a part of PUBLIC POPS UP! this summer, Public Works will be hosting a participatory dance piece set to Alicia Keys’ seminal classic “Empire State of Mind” from the Original Cast Recording of the Broadway musical HELL’S KITCHEN, which originated at The Public in the fall of 2023. The city-wide initiative will be choreographed by HELL’S KITCHEN’s four-time Tony-nominated director/choreographer Camille A. Brown and her organization Every Body Move, and co-directed by Brown and Public Works’ Laurie Woolery. American Sign Language interpretation provided by ASL Artist Brandon Kazen-Maddox. It will be the ultimate celebration of New York, bringing together folks of many ages and abilities. The experience will culminate in a performance both by and for New Yorkers on Monday, August 12 at 6:00PM. Following the initiative, there will be a screening of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING at dusk as a part of Central Park Conservancy's 2024 Film Festival, sponsored by National Geographic Partners, LLC.
Expanding Public Works’ 12-year tradition of bringing together New Yorkers from all over the city, we’re inviting YOU to be a part of an ambitious, participatory dance piece in Central Park on August 12. Sharing the vision of the Broadway production of HELL’S KITCHEN that celebrates a community unified through song and dance, Public Works will activate the entire city of New York into a shared celebration of radical civic pride through LET’S HEAR IT FOR NEW YORK! An Unforgettable Dance Experience.

What to expect Day-Of...
No time to learn the dance beforehand? No problem! When you arrive in Frisbee Hill, you will self-select one of three zones:
Express: I know the dance well and/or I can learn the dance quickly.
Local: I kind of know the dance and/or I can learn the dance with some guidance.
Shuttle: I don't know the dance at all and/or I could use extra support learning the dance.
Our Public Works Core—100 community members from our partner organizations, coming from across all five boroughs—will work with each group to make sure you feel comfortable and ready to dance to your heart's content! You will practice the dance for around 45 minutes, then perform the dance together with everyone, celebrating New York City, the arts, and the magic of community.
Language Accessibility
There will be Mandarin, Spanish, and American Sign Language interpreters there to translate instructions as needed. American Sign Language interpretation provided by ASL Artist Brandon Kazen-Maddox.
