January 06, 2027 - January 24, 2027
Venue Barbaralee Theater
Runtime 90 minutes, no intermission
Presented by Under the Radar, Cinereach, Foment Productions and Jayson Jackson
Written and Performed by Sarah Jones
Directed by Eric Ting
Inspired by the Tony Award-winning solo phenom Sarah Jones's acclaimed podcast, America, Who Hurt You?, this dazzling new play channels 250 years of American history through her singular gift for transformation and never-before-shared details of her personal life. Directed by Obie Award-winner Eric Ting, AWHY moves between hilarity and heartbreak, curiosity and reckoning, as Jones embodies a sweeping cast of characters who each carry a piece of the country's unfinished story.
Originally co-commissioned by Oxford University and National Black Theatre for a premiere at Oxford’s first-ever performing arts center, the play now arrives stateside, following a sold-out run in Brooklyn, as part of a national tour marking America's 250th anniversary, and beyond. It is a fitting moment to ask not just who we've been, but who gets to tell our story going forward. Equal parts comedy, confession, and communion, AMERICA, WHO HURT YOU? doesn't offer easy answers. Instead it opens up a communal space to face our nation's most bitter truths with an open heart. In Jones's hands, these foundational fractures become the starting point for something like grace.
