Our December Civic Salon is here, and it’s a super-sized event! 2020 has been a challenging year: a dogged fight for civic and political change; unprecedented protests in the face of injustice; an ever-worsening series of pandemics. For those at the intersections of multiple identities – particularly the Queer, Trans, and Black communities – survival requires a deep sense of fortitude, resilience, and love. As we take stock of where we’ve been and where we’re going, what does it mean to make space for our full humanity in times of crisis – to truly be seen?Inspired by the ten-part podcast BEING SEEN, we’ll answer this question by taking our lead from the beauty and resilience of the queer Black experience. Featuring a keynote speech with Hari Ziyad, the editor-in-chief of RaceBaitr and author of the upcoming memoir Black Boy Out of Time; an interview with author, activist and auteur Darnell Moore; and music by singer, songwriter, artist and activist Mykal Kilgore.
Civic Salons are a community crossroads where artists and audiences can come together to nurture our minds and our bodies. Through songs, poetry, text, and speeches, Civic Salons feature artists, activists, and organizers who are using their voices to create change in their communities. Break bread with your neighbor, raise your voice in song, and leave inspired.

Mykal Kilgore
Mykal Kilgore is a native Floridian, an award-winning actor, Grammy and NAACP Image Awards nominee, and singer/songwriter of “A Man Born Black.” His sound is a gumbo of American roots music and modern feels with the ability to go from Broadway Showtune Storytelling to Soul and Jazz scatting to Gospel. Mykal was most recently seen on tour with India Arie and as The Witch in Into The Woods at Barrington Stage Company. Other theater credits include The Who’s Tommy at The Kennedy Center, Songs For A New World at Encores! Off-Center, Motown the Musical and Hair on Broadway, as well as Book of Mormon (1st National Tour.) He has also appeared in TV/Film with roles in NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar and The Wiz Live and Collateral Beauty. Mykal’s racked up 10M plus views on social media with his videos from Scott Bradlee’s Post-Modern Jukebox (PMJ) and his viral “Reclaiming My Time” video. Darnell L. Moore
Darnell L. Moore is the author of the 2019 Lambda Literary Award winning memoir, No Ashes in the Fire: Coming of Age Black & Free in America, which was listed as a 2018 NYT Notable Book and a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers' pick. Moore is also the host and co-producer of the Being Seen Podcast, a ground-breaking 11-part podcast exploring culture’s role in resolving the tension between how we are seen and how we see ourselves. Moore is also a writer-in-residence at the Center on African American Religion, Sexual Politics and Social Justice at Columbia University and a 2019 Senior Fellow at the Annenberg Innovation Lab at the University of Southern California. His writings have appeared in the New York Times Book Review; Playboy; VICE; The Guardian; The Nation; EBONY and other outlets. Hari Ziyad
Hari Ziyad is a cultural critic, a screenwriter, the editor-in-chief of RaceBaitr, and the author of Black Boy Out of Time. They are a 2021 Lambda Literary Fellow, and their writing has been featured in BuzzFeed, Out, The Guardian, Paste magazine, and the academic journal Critical Ethnic Studies, among other publications. Previously they were the managing editor of the Black Youth Project and a script consultant on the television series David Makes Man. Hari spends their all-too-rare free time trying to get their friends to give the latest generation of R & B starlets a chance and attempting to entertain their always very unbothered pit bull mix, Khione.
