An uplifting and transportive evening of music and recitation, immersing us in the images, rhythms, and liberating messages that pulse through the poetry of the beloved sage and mystic Rumi, with acclaimed translator and vocalist, Haleh Liza Gafori, Grammy-nominated musician Shahzad Ismaily, and drummer Daniel Fresco. Singing in Persian and reciting in English, Haleh will weave original musical compositions, stories, and translations from her book GOLD Poems by Rumi, published by New York Review Books. Listed as a favorite book of 2022 by Maria Popova of the Marginalian, GOLD was hailed by Publishers Weekly as an "energetic translation...delivering unforgettable phrases...Rumi's introspective nature...cosmic vision...and deeply contemplative poems star in this worthy translation."
"Ecstatic and piercing...Haleh Liza Gafori's translation has lifted a veil, bringing Rumi closer into the quick of our present. Each poem is a divine invitation. Free your mind. Drown in love.” – V (formerly Eve Ensler) “GOLD is everything Rumi was himself—sacred, profane, laugh out loud funny, deeply earnest, demotic, and yes, Persian. There’s a rich fluency here not just in idiom but in gesture, in spirit. - Kaveh Akbar, Poetry Editor at The Nation "Shahzad Ismaily is one of music’s most coveted collaborators.” - The New York Times This production is supported in part by NYSCA/New York State Council on the Arts.
