What's On
As an expression of our ongoing cultural transformation, we are currently engaging in a period of deep reflection about how we welcome, read, and respond to submissions of scripts and other materials. We desire to build and steward a submissions program that is sustainable; that respects artists’ labor; that is tangibly connected to the active development and producing life of the theater; and that is, in its ethos and its manifestation, truly public.
Because we believe a rigorous evaluation of our historical practices and a spacious, imaginative proposal of new possibilities are vital investments in the future, as we undertake this work, we are pressing pause on our submissions program.
Meanwhile, our commitment to deep, supportive collaboration with artists on projects at all stages of development is vibrantly alive. The Public is nurturing 28 active play commissions and planning more than 20 workshops, some dedicated to the dramaturgical development of plays to which we have committed production, others to the conceptual exploration of new work in its earliest phases of life. We welcomed a new cohort of 10 playwrights to the Emerging Writers Group (EWG) this fall, and are engaged in vital, ongoing exchange with artists through a series of residency programs, including the Apothetae Residency, the Brooklyn College Residencies, and the Ntozake Shange Social Justice Theater Residency.
Please return to this page for updates as we dream and plan. We look forward to sharing the results of this inquiry with you by the end of the year.
