May 12 at 6:30pm: A Seat at the Table: Culinary & Cultural Delights

Cesar Chavez said, “the people who give you their food give you their heart.” In this intimate conversation about all things food, Rabia Chaudry (Fatty Fatty Boom Boom), Padma Lakshmi (Tomatoes for Neela, Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi), and Mayukh Sen (Taste Makers: Seven Immigrant Women Who Revolutionized Food in America) explore how cooking a meal, serving others, and feeding oneself can become an act of cross-cultural exchange in a world fraught with division. Moderated by Dawn Davis, editor in chief of Bon Appétit and Epicurious.

May 12 at 9pm: Spirited Away
Four acclaimed writers–Namwali Serpell (The Furrows), Kevin Chen (Ghost Town), Joseph Han (Nuclear Family), and Samanta Schweblin (Seven Empty Houses) convene for one special event exploring and excavating the invisible forces, spectral presences, and haunting memories that shape and inform their fictional narratives. In the novels of these authors, characters feel the weight of other lives and voices impinging on their own. With moderator Andy Tepper the authors will discuss what to make of these ghost-like apparitions, both real and surreal. Who are they and what are they trying to tell us?
