Thursday, March 7: Boom.Diwan and FriendsFounded by applied-ethnomusicologist Ghazi Al-Mulaifi, Boom.Diwan is a modern Khaleeji ensemble that takes a contemporary approach to reinvigorating the experimental dialogic spirit of Khaleeji sea-faring music.Join us for an evening of experimentation as we introduce the traditional Kuwaiti Sea Arts (pearl diving music) and dialog with our friends from the NYC global jazz scene.

Following the success of the Cuban Khaleeji Project, recently revived in 3 sold-out concerts in New York, and Saudi Arabia, Boom.Diwan collaborates once again with the multi Grammy Award winning pianist Arturo O’Farrill. Experience the rhythms and sounds of two seafaring cultures coming together for an intimate concert that features a Kuwaiti Sea Arts (bahri) percussion ensemble and Afro-Latin jazz musicians.

About the Cuban Khaleeji Project
A musical exploration of the Arabic and North African roots of Afro Latin and Afro Cuban music and the seafaring music of the Arabian Gulf, Arturo and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra join together with special guests, including Boom.Diwan (Kuwait), Ali Obaid (UAE), Malika Zarra (MAR/FR) and Yazz Ahmed (BHR/UK). The project was commissioned by and debuted at the Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi in 2019 and had its North American premiere this past August with three nights of sold-out shows at Little Island’s “Amph”, one of New York City’s newest and most dynamic cultural spaces.

 

About Belongó
Founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007,  Belongó's mission is to perform, educate about, and preserve the music of the Americas, emanating from African and indigenous roots, through the entry point of jazz. Belongó produces the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra's annual performance season in NYC. They also maintain a world-class collection of Latin jazz musical scores and recordings. Their education programs include the Belongó Music Academy, an in-school program serving public schools citywide, the pre-professional youth orchestra known as the Fat Cats and Global Rhythms in Our Tribe (G.R.I.O.T.); a community music program that engages underserved youth. Belongó is headquartered in East Harlem at El Barrio’s ArtSpace – PS109.
