A Celebration of the Life and Music of Juan Carlos Formell

A Celebration of the Life and Music of Juan Carlos Formell

February 18, 2024

Music enthusiasts will gather at Joe's Pub for a heartfelt tribute to the legendary singer, guitarist, and bass player Juan Carlos Formell who unexpectedly and suddenly died last summer. The concert is set to celebrate the life and music of Formell featuring Cuban songstress Danae Blanco with a dynamic band of special guests. The celebration of life will also serve as a launch of Juan Carlos Formell’s final recorded album, Echa Pa’ Ca, featuring vocalist Danae Blanco and Formell on 12 string guitar. Recorded and produced by Jose Conde in Brooklyn and Havana, the album will be released on PIPIKI RECORDS on February 14 and will be made available as a free download to all who purchase tickets to the show.

Juan Carlos Formell was a pivotal figure in the New York Cuban, Latin, and World music scene since his arrival in 1994 from Cuba. He left an indelible mark on the global music landscape. While widely recognized for his tenure as bass player in his namesake father's renowned band, Los Van Van, Formell carved his own path to success, establishing himself as a songwriter and virtuoso guitarist whose innovative fusion of jazz, Brazilian, pop, and rock with traditional Cuban music garnered international acclaim, leading to a Grammy nomination for his 2000 album, Songs from a Little Blue House. Formell’s influence in New York and beyond spanned over 25 years, inspiring musicians and audiences alike. His unique blend of genres and commitment to pushing musical boundaries cemented his legacy as a pioneer in the contemporary Cuban music scene.

Presented and led by singer, producer Jose Conde, the tribute show will include percussionist and rumba poet Roman Diaz, Afro Cuban dancer and painter Carlos Mateu, guitarist Vinicius Gomes, percussionist Chuito Quintero, bassist Gabe Case, singer Roberto Poveda, singer Isabel Alfonso, drummer Gintas Janusonis, trumpeter Steve Gluzband, violinist Yrving Yeras, trombonist Rafi Malkiel, Jose Conde on guitar and voice, and more.
